Uniforms vs. Non Uniforms
Over the years school has become a place of academic perseverance and the development of student’s personalities. Many students strive to achieve their own style through appearance by having an original style. Uniqueness and originality is something that students crave for throughout the different grade levels of school, especially in high school. Many students try to appeal two new social trends that would affect their placement in the school among other students. Many break dress code and violate the Student Code of Conduct in order to be socially accepted by their peers or to rebel against administration. By wearing school uniforms students are less likely to be persecuted based upon clothing, but are able to focus on creating a well-rounded platform of discipline.
Many schools across the country are enforcing uniforms as a mandatory style choice for their students. Predominantly uniforms are worn by students who can afford to attend a private school, but are also seen in charter schools not in a majority of public schools. However, public schools in the years of 2003-2004 as well as 2011-2012 have increased the requirement for students to wear uniforms by 6% (National Center for Education Statistics). The increased percentage of students wearing uniforms in public schools stems from the geographical location of the students who attend the school. Studies from the National Center for Education Statistics as well as the National Association of Elementary School Principals, states that students who live in the inner city, suburbs, or rural areas attend schools surrounded by high crime rate. Many students in schools that do not force students to wear uniforms are subjected to bullying more often based upon their choice of clothes. Not to say that bullying isn't in schools that make uniforms mandatory for students, however; it is more common that students will get bullied if there are not wearing the latest trends. Former dean and principal of River City Science Academy Michael Steinhardt gave insightful information about the uniform policy in correspondence to bullying. Mr. Steinhardt states that the dress code enforced at River City Science Academy helped control bullying among students, due to all students wearing the same outfit. Even though bullying will exist in every school, having students wear uniforms eases the visible difference of financial classes for students. Therefore students of a lower income family cannot be subjected from bullying based on appearance by students of a higher income family as stated by the IES and NAESP.
