Harold scuttles up his tree to wait the fifteen minutes until the U 6’s start. Harold knows that it is unlikely to be anyone watching him. He waits and is surprised when the U’12’s game, which Harold desperately wants to play in, a red Alfa Romeo glides majestically up and Harold as silents as a fox creeps up to see how it is, normally in his mind the cog wheels will be turning to see if he could steal something but not this time because this is at a local rugby ground. His suspicions were erased when he realised who was now stepping out of the car, David Pocock (who is not playing this year) and some Brumbies development officers. Harold was over the moon, now all he had to do was grab attention of one of them and he might have a chance to live his dreams. He now goes in and becomes a spectator in the crowd. Harold unsure what to do stayed in his position, not daring to move muscle in case he destroyed this opportunity. He spoke with a clear voice that seemed to ebb and flow around him. He simply said “Show us what you’ve got.” Harold still didn’t move it was if someone had put him in cement. Finally, after sufficient urging from David he started showing him his skill. He kicked, he ran, he tackled, he passed and he even ripped the ball off David Pocock. He was still going when the game finished, the ACT Junior Brumbies had a triumphant win over SIRU. Only then did he go back to congratulate the players and and the development officer realised his mouth had been agape and shut it with lightning speed. When David came back he said two words that Harold had been longing to hear for as long as he could remember, “You’re in,” he said
