Without memory, there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future. (Wiesel, n.d.). Without the Fourth Amendment, there is no privacy. The Fourth Amendment is a civil right. It protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures. The police can't search you or even your house without a search warrant or probable cause. In our society right now we have surveillance pretty much everywhere. No matter where you go there are surveillance cameras nearby somewhere. The Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. Big Brother is at the top of the pyramid. Only making up 2% of the population, the Inner Party is the ruler of Oceania. They make policies, decisions and govern (“Writing as I please”, 2013). The United states have political parties which are called, Republican party (represented by an elephant) or Democratic party (represented by a donkey) ( “Why are there political parties?”, 2014). By controlling the past, the Party is able to manipulate the minds of Party members. In Winston society Big Brother is pretty much like a god, government and the leader of Oceania. Whatever Big Brother said was right everyone else had to agree with him. Winston had to rewrite everything in the past to make Big brother look good and to make him seem that he was always right. Big brother wanted everyone to be on his side. For example on page 39 says” It was therefore necessary to rewrite a paragraph of Big Brother’s speech in such a way to make him predict the thing that had actually happened” ( Orwell, 1949). What Big Brother does is similar to what our government tells us. Ed snowden, NSA whistleblower said in an interview “ tell the press about this thing and that thing so that the public is on our side”.
