Evil is a present theme in each of these gothic style stories. They all clearly portray the sinful nature of mankind and the wicked each person has within them. The “Fall of the House of Usher” is unique in a way because of the haunted house feeling Poe gives. Though it deals with fear and spiritual entities, the lay out Poe describes so vividly separates this horror story from the rest. “Young Goodman Brown” and “The Minister’s Black Veil” are the most similar due to the corresponding theme of mystery, as well as humankind’s mortality. “Ethan Brand” also shares the subject of sin, like “Young Goodman Brown” and “The Minister’s Black Veil”, but in a more acute manner. Hawthorne describes the horrifying results of finding the unpardonable sin. Though each of Poe and Hawthorne’s stories share a comparable major theme, one of fear and sin. They each possess distinctive details of how each person deals with the sin within himself and those around them. In “bartleby the Scrivener”, Melville shows just how much one can suffer with no one else noticing. The main concepts of the Romantic time period was literature written about nature, emotion, supernatural elements, individualism, etc. Gothic style literature was also on the rise during the romantic time. In “The House of Usher”, Edgar Allan Poe shows Romanticism through nature and supernatural elements. By describing the decaying character of the house and property, it allows the reader to understand the haunted atmosphere from the beginning. The main theme of romanticism would be the supernatural elements throughout the story.
