This reader thought that the setting of I Am David was just as imagined. At some parts it looked a little different, but for the most part it was the same. The camp was exactly how the reader imagined it, but the roads looked a little different. The dock and the boat heading towards Italy looked different than the reader thought. The inside of the boat was more spacious and empty. Maria’s shed that caught on fire looked different than the reader had imagined. This reader thought that the shed would be a little bit bigger than it turned out to be in the movie. The changes did not end with the setting.

In the book, while walking through the snow, David fell through a farmer’s roof and had to stay with him until he could escape. The farmer had a dog and when David escaped, the dog came with him. When David and the dog were on their way to Denmark, David accidentally found his way back to camp. The dog sacrificed himself so David could escape. These things did not happen in the movie. In the beginning of the movie, when David first escaped, he snuck into the back of the truck where there were other people hiding. He got a ride until he could escape without being seen. This part did not happen in the book. There were many times in the movie where David gets caught by guards, but escapes. An example of this is when David was buying bread, the baker was getting David some bread from the back of the store and two guards approached the baker. Knowing he would be caught, David ran away.
