Compare And Contrast Hercules In Beowulf

Improved Essays
There were three battles that Beowulf was in. The first was against the man-eater Grendel, the second was against Grendel 's Mother, and the last fight was against a dragon. Hercules on the other hand, went through many more battles, succeeding in each and every one of them. Even though Beowulf has won all of his battles, Hercules would definitely win against Beowulf in a battle due to Hercules having the greater strength, mentor, and allies.

A part in the Hero 's Journey cycle is meeting the mentors, in Beowulf 's story, his mentor was King Hrothgar. “I used to know him when he was a young boy. / His father before him was called Ecgtheow.” (372-373) This quote here is when Hrothgar was talking about Beowulf, and how he knew Beowulf, relating

Beowulf has many allies, maybe even more than Hercules. But they weren’t a hundred percent loyal to him, if they were, they would have stayed with him till the end, Beowulf’s “allies” would have fought with him even when it was a time of life or death. If they were truly loyal they wouldn’t have left like cowards and let Beowulf fight to his death on his own. “No help or backing was to be had then / from his high-born comrades; that hand-picked troop / broke ranks and ran for their lives.” (2597-2598) Here is when the story was talking about how the men ran for their lives. When they left Beowulf to fight on his own; even though Beowulf believed them and picked them for a reason. Its importance here would be to show the reader that the men do leave Beowulf to fight the dragon alone. But Hercules had an ally and a best friend, he had Pegasus, who is a winged horse. Pegasus was as loyal as can be; he was with Hercules throughout all battles, and did not leave Hercules behind just because he got scared. If the battle was to get rough, he stayed there with Hercules because they were best friends. If you really look into the Hercules movie, turns out Hercules had many strong allies, like all the gods in Mount Olympus. If Hercules needed a hand, he could also ask his father Zeus. Beowulf would really need to get allies who would stick with him until the very end and be there with him when he asks them to, …show more content…
Beowulf had a few enemies, like Grendel, who he then nearly killed until Grendel ran to his mother. His mother wanted vengeance against Beowulf, making her another enemy. "She 's taken revenge for your victory over Grendel. / For your strength, your mighty grip, and that monster 's / Death." (1334-1336) In the story we are told that Grendel 's mother wanted to get back at Beowulf for going after her son who is close to his death, making her a definite enemy. Then there is Hercules who had one specific enemy who had his own ways of making Hercules’ life miserable, and that is Hercules’ kinsman, Hades. Hades is also a god, who had two minions, Panic and Pain, who ran his dirty errands. When we see that there is a god whose full-time job was to ruin someone’s life, it shows that Hercules had more than enough to go against, and then when he succeeds it shows great strength that he can keep going. Beowulf would need more experience with

Any good king would have known that it would have been a good idea to bring many men to fight a dragon but due in part to his lack of experience, Beowulf only brought a few men to fight the dragon. The other reason Beowulf was not a great king and he did not do well is because he was still too hungry for glory. Another part of being a good king is letting the warriors do the fighting and battling and paying them later. Beowulf never stopped seeing himself as a warrior even when he started being king and his courage never ceased, this ultimately led to his demise.…

Heroic people and ideals are frequently demonstrated throughout traditional epics. A hero to most would be someone who has courage and sacrificed his life for others. However, there are also negative traits of a hero. In Beowulf’s three fights against three monsters he uses different methods, techniques, weapons, and he wins different “trophies” each time. He defeated Grendel, the reckless monster, and his malicious mother one-on-one.…

Beowulf’s distinguished bravery sets him apart from most leading characters because of his acceptance of death and fate. He would lay his life down on the line to save his people from a threatening creature and he would not have to think twice about it. For example, when asked by Hrothgar to save his citizens from Grendel’s mother, Beowulf replies with “And if your enemy should end my life Then be, O generous prince, forever The father and protector of all whom I leave Behind me, here in your hands, my beloved Comrades left with no leader, their leader Dead” (Beowulf 452-457). In this quotation, Beowulf is advising Hrothgar that if he is to pass away while attempting to defeat Grendel’s mother and save the day, that Hrothgar must watch over Beowulf’s men and protect them since their leader will be gone. Beowulf is stating that he does not mind if he dies however, he only cares about the well-being of his men and wants them to be accounted for if he were to perish.…

Without his loyalty to others, he wouldn’t be nearly as brave. Beowulf knew that, “When [they] crossed the sea, [his] comrades and [him], … knew that all [their] purpose was this: to win the goodwill of [Hrothgar’s] people or die in battle,” (29). Thus, showing that Beowulf is loyal and will fulfill his promise to help defeat Grendel. He knew what he had to do and would stay loyal no matter the obstacle or enemy. Fully aware of death, Beowulf bravely fought Grendel anyway to prove his loyalty to Hrothgar.…
