It was a time in which women questioned their identities and their roles in Mexican society, and strived to become more than what they had always been restricted to. An example of one of these women was Gertrudis, Tita’s older sister. She challenges the typical female responsibilities of being a mother and wife. She runs away from her home and certain destiny of becoming a housewife, by at first working in a brothel. When she realizes that still is not what she wants in life, she steps foot into the previously male-dominated world of the army. Like several women in Mexican history during this time period, she becomes a general of her own brigade. In addition to this, the novel showcases that the restrictions of women to be what is expected of them are also pushed by the women themselves, like Tita’s mother, Mama Elena. She forces Tita to give up happiness and love in order to continue a family
