Fear of the atomic bomb spread through the world after the end of World War II as the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki became clear to the public of the West who feared the attack with use of such a weapon on home soil by the Communist East . Tension achieved a maximum in 1962 through the Cuban Missile Crisis as the Communist encroachment of nuclear arms came within striking distance of the USA. The fears that erupted from this eventually led to a nuclear standoff and the Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) doctrine that would ensure the cold relations between the Capitalists and Communists . Overall, it the development of nuclear arms and the fear of destruction led to the standoff between the East and West that would spark and progress the Cold War
