A phobia, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “an exaggerated, usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation. It may be hard for the afflicted to sufficiently determine or communicate the source of this fear, but it exists”. In the past years a specific phobia had spread, through the western countries and its known as Islamophobia.
The leading cause for Islamophobia is usually misinformation or total lack of information based on the religion. Unfortunately, people who have Islamophobia, are not likely to be willing to educate themselves about their fears or spend time around any Islamic people. I think that people see Islam in this way because of the way that the media shows it and when they see some bad Muslims.
In the past few days, I saw a report on a news channel. The report was saying that how the media this days plays a major role in spreading Islamophobia; by their news for example: if one Muslim do something wrong all the media will spread the news and exaggerate it and keep on repeating it until all the people sees it. As a result of that they create an image in their minds that all Muslims are terrorists, Islam is about terrorism. However, on the other hand, if a person from any other religion do the same bad thing that the Muslim did media will ignore the story and will not spread it among the people the same way they did when it’s a Muslim. In the past month, most of us heard about the story of the kid in Texas who built a clock, and brought it to school trying to impress his teachers and friends. Sadly when one of his teachers saw it, she thought that it’s a bomb and the school called the police. When the police came, they took this 14 years old boy, they arrested him not only that, but also handcuffed him in front all his schoolmates. Seriously, a bomb, the kid is just 14 years old. Some people argue that they had to do what they did for the safety of all the students and because they thought it’s a bomb. Really! If they really thought that it’s a bomb, why …show more content…
However, when they saw that it was built by a brown color Muslim kid they got scared they allowed their Islamophobia to control their reaction.
Recently, I have seen a video that grabbed my attention. The video was a reality social experiment; showing how some people these days’ judge people according to their religion, it was about how people react when they see Muslims. They immediately think that we the Muslims and Islam is all about Violence and terrorism.
As I mentioned in the beginning that some people have this Islamophobia because of the lack of information they have and because they are refusing to educate themselves and get to know Islam. So I am going to mention some few important things about Islam that most of them doesn’t know about.
Do you know what the main word in Islam is? The word that Islam teach us to say when we meet each other every day, every time. It’s ((alsalam alikom)). This means peace to you. Also do you know how many times words mercy, peace and compassion was mentioned in the holy Quran 355
