Columbus struggled finding someone to fund his voyage. After being denied by the court of Portugal, and seven long years of lobbying at the Spanish Court, Columbus was finally granted the funds he needed for his voyage by King Ferdinand II, and Isabella I. Unlike Columbus, it wasn't as difficult for Lindbergh. Lindbergh’s costs to build the “Spirit of St.Louis” were supported by local businessman in the surrounding area. Since Lindbergh survived his flight from San Diego to New York, he still had a good standing airplane for his flight across the Atlantic. However, Lindbergh faced many challenges during his flight. His biggest opponent was Mother Nature herself. Before Lindbergh could even take off, bad weather would delay his flight for a number of days. Once he was able to take off, he experienced the soft field due to rain the previous day. This caused the heavy plane to gather speed slowly. Even though the dark, foggy skies were a challenge for Lindbergh, he pushed on landing in Paris after a thirty-three hour flight. Lindbergh wasn't the only one who faced challenges during his journey. During his voyage, Columbus faced navigational challenges such as: lack of winds, and a longer trip than anticipated. Columbus had miscalculated the length of the trip. His resolution was to keep two logs. One log would consist of the true distance traveled and the other would consist of a lesser distance. Both were faced with the demands of financing and successfully navigating their treks across the daunting Atlantic. Neither Columbus nor Lindbergh were successful or financially well-off men, and asking those with money to finance their adventures was no simple task, as they had valid concerns of the men succeeding, especially Columbus, who requested such a large amount of money from the Spanish monarchy for his hopefully profitable expedition. With their individual charisma and determination, however, they did eventually succeed in their effort. Lindbergh gained enough money for his plane - named “The Spirit of St. Louis” in honor of his financiers - and various supplies. Columbus acquired three ships, money for trading purposes, enough crewmembers for all three vehicles to be suitably managed, and other necessities required for a voyage spanning an unknown amount of months out at sea, posing a greater loss for Columbus should he fail.…
