As it is told in many history books, Columbus discovered America in 1492. Wrong. Columbus discovered what is now modern day Caribbeans, which he named Hispaniola. During his voyage, Columbus overcame many challenges. He is given credit for his discovery on October 10th by annually celebrating Columbus Day. Columbus struggled finding someone to fund his voyage. After being denied by the court of Portugal, and seven long years of lobbying at the Spanish Court, Columbus was finally granted the funds he needed for his voyage by King Ferdinand II, and Isabella I. Unlike Columbus, it wasn't as difficult for Lindbergh. Lindbergh’s costs to build the “Spirit of St.Louis” were supported by local businessman in the surrounding area. Since Lindbergh survived his flight from San Diego to New York, he still had a good standing airplane for his flight across the Atlantic. However, Lindbergh faced many challenges during his flight. His biggest opponent was Mother Nature herself. Before Lindbergh could even take off, bad weather would delay his flight for a number of days. Once he was able to take off, he experienced the soft field due to rain the previous day. This caused the heavy plane to gather speed slowly. Even though the dark, foggy skies were a challenge for Lindbergh, he pushed on landing in Paris after a thirty-three hour flight. Lindbergh wasn't the only one who faced challenges during his journey. During his voyage, Columbus faced navigational challenges such as: lack of winds, and a longer trip than anticipated.
