The way Fitzgerald uses color symbolism throughout the novel is undeniably astounding and the symbolisms help shape the novel to what it is today. Despite Gatsby starting as a lower class citizen in the novel, he eventually ends up in the wealthier class at the end of the novel. Gatsby earns his money by selling over-the-counter drugs illegally which brings in a lot of money for him and lets him have all the nice objects he has in life; his car, house, such great parties, etc. Gatsby works hard to achieve his wealth to impress Daisy in hopes of making her fall in love with him again with all the extravagant objects he has in his life. Gatsby also tries to impress with his wealth by buying a yellow rich car, that is to show that he has money and is willing to spend it to impress people, even though he does not act like it. Another way Gatsby likes to show off his wealth is through the parties he has everyday. In this quote from The Great Gatsby it illustrates just how extravagant his parties were, “Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York--every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves” (Fitzgerald 43). In this quote it helps illustrate just how nice his parties are from the cocktail drinks, the amazing food, hundreds of guests arriving and lastly the destroying of his house at the end of every party. Gatsby shows off his wealth by being able to fix his house after every part with no worry about how much is costs or how much it will cost for all the food at the next party. But, in the end the real reason why Gatsby works so hard to achieve all this money is so that Daisy accepts him and takes him in because before she could not marry a poor boy like Gatsby. Jay Gatsby out of all the character in the novel demonstrated wealth the most out of all the amazing parties he had, the nice cars, the nice clothes and lastly all the food he is able to afford from his
