Those who lived in the mid-West had the hardest time. There were problems growing crops and having livestock. Water was a luxury. The mid-West struggled with jobs and women struggled to hold their household …show more content…
Some women were wealthy and there was no need to bring in a second income. Those women would be able to stay home and keep command of the home. There were dinners to be made and children to tend to. There were those times that there were nanny’s that would help with the children and house help that would help with chores. The housewife would organize everything and stay at home.
In the West many homes were a mix of housewife’s that would stay home and/or work. Many women in the west came from the East or mid-West. They came from struggling home of the depression. They came to the West for a better life. Many of the families would buy land and build as a way of gaining income. Wife’s would stay at home and command the children with chores or help with building with their father. It was a hard time for many and money/jobs were scarce.
“A study made clear once again that American farm women knew they had to work, both in the house and outside of it, in order to maintain the value of what many clearly understood to be their own investments” (Osterud, 2012). Women were strong and had strong family values inside the home and working on the farm. They did not have the freedoms that men did. Men worked with stocks and in large corporations. The 1920’s were an age of women coming on to their own right. They started to have many freedoms, which included working outside the home including raising children and running a household.
