Finding the building where Colonel Gaff was based was an easy enough task. It was one of the few buildings that was actually reinforced, had two guards posted at the door, and the banners of the Galactic Republic hanging outside. Straight-backed, uniformed wait staff crisscrossed the floor of City Hall’s ballroom. With silver trays held aloft, they glided effortlessly through the crowd, their blank expressions cleverly masking the tedium of serving champagne and hors d'oeuvres to equally bored guests. Dozens of white-clothed tables adorned with elaborate arrangements of hydrangeas and magnolias gave refuge to the honored attendees who were either too tired or too disinterested to mingle with the men and women gathered in cliques throughout the room. From their position on a small raised platform, a string quartet provided a pleasant auditory backdrop to the chatter of voices, the dulcet tones swelling and falling like a warm summer breeze. It was the party event of the year, and for the mayor’s wife, the soirée was an opportunity to gain the enviable reputation of perfect hostess; for her guests, it was a grandiose display of autocratic superiority.…

In the film “12 O’clock High,” leadership and followership play a significant role in the plot, and it has been used for decades by the military as a training exercise. The same principles were used in the Human Factors class to help the students determine their leadership styles and how to be a better follower. From the very first few scenes, “12 O’clock High” was a true story about how a bombing unit in World War 2 bounced back from a period of bad luck and poor training to become one of the best units the U.S. Army Air Force had. As the plot begins, Colonel Davenport is shown the Officer in Command of the bomber unit. While he participates in every bombing run, and has a close relationship with most of his men, his men are performing poorly…
