College Football Playoff Case Study

Is the College Football Playoff a step in the right direction in this sport or is it a step backward. In the past the College Football champion used to be decided by a National Championship game between the two highest ranked teams given to the two teams with the best records. Nowadays the champion is decided through a playoff system that includes the four best teams in the country. In my opinion I think that the playoff is a great idea, and I strongly believe it should continue. The College football playoffs should continue because more people like the idea of a playoff between four teams rather than a National Championship between two teams. One reason of why it should stay as a playoff because more people like the idea of a playoff system. Another reason why it should stay a playoff is because by using the playoff method it is easier to find out who the deserving champion should be. Finally by staying at the playoff more College football teams can make more money. College football needs a playoff system, and many people like the idea of deciding the champion in a playoff rather than one game. One reason why people like the idea of this new system is because of other sports that do this. Some people think that college football is in a great place with just doing bowls. People think that it is easier and will not interfere with other sports. However in almost all sports the champion is decided by a playoff system including the NFL and even division two football. According to procon.org 85% of college football fans support the playoff system and 69% think that more teams should be added. Another reason why the playoff should continue is because the games have received better T.V ratings in the form of a playoff. According to latimes.com the first college football playoff championship between Oregon and the winner Ohio State got a rating of 18.9 braking the rating record on the ESPN network where the previos National Championship not in the playoff system recieved a rating of 15.3. In the old bowl season college football would give money to each team in each conference and those teams would receive money to use for their programs. Some think that the bowl system makes more money because each game is more important. However for the first playoff more money was made because they could sell the tickets for a higher price. One reason why teams can make more money is that they have a possibility to play one extra game which can give extra money to the school. Another reason why schools can make more money from the playoffs is that by doing well or winning different sponsors might want to sponsor the team. Therefore by getting a sponsor the college will get money for it and will profit from it. Finally extra money is given to the top four schools as a reward for making it to the playoffs.
