Youth athletics has played a massive role in shaping my character. Whether it be learning the value of community or stress management, these activities have attributed or further developed more characteristics present in me than all other experiences I have combined. Before joining the Plantation Athletic League, I had a very limited understanding of what a community is or is supposed to be. As I progressed through different sports with peers, I had formed something completely new to me: a bond, friendship. It became apparent to me that life is not just about you or how successful you are at any particular activity or event, but rather how we can become successful. I learned helping one another can benefit the group more than it could just one person, which benefits you more in the long run. I suppose what I am saying is youth athletics forever carved into me the immense value of being a team player, someone who sacrifices themselves for the betterment of the group. Participating in athletics allowed me to be introduced to highly stressful environments from a young age. From the pressure put on my teams to win I learned …show more content…
When its that time of the year again and standardized tests are being handed out like candy on Halloween, it is routine to see a few panic attacks happening in the hallway. If standardized tests are bad then just forget about that SAT room Saturday morning. It is not uncommon to see tears rolling down faces like an avalanche crashing down the heart of a mountain. Through all of it I have managed to keep composure and not let it get to me while thriving in each area offered. My time at Plantation Athletic League has instilled this quality into me, which I can honestly contribute my success against stress and pressure in life

Students go through a lot of inner trauma during the test phase which ultimately reflects on their score. It has been recorded that “from kindergarten through high school, the causes of childhood stress are numerous. One of the most commonly cited is standardized-test stress, which starts in first-grade in many states” (Wilde). This is the problem, not only is standardized testing causing severe stress on the brightest students, but it also affects the younger generations more drastically, causing some to end up vomiting during the test (ProCon). Never in a million years would I have dreamed of making varsity as a freshman, especially for a team that had just won back-to-back state championships. Throughout middle school, I had to overcome adversity associated with being a “science nerd.” When people started to discover my academic aptitude, I was labeled a “nerd” who couldn’t be athletic. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high.…

Up until a year ago, I was one of the most conceited people you’d ever meet. School has never been difficult for me, and when I was in middle school, I undoubtedly showed that to my classmates. If I earned a 102% on a test, I’d relentlessly question my classmates about their scores, impulsively blurt out my own score, and heartlessly cause them to hang their heads in self-disappointment. Eventually, I realized the reason I did this was because I assumed my only talents were affiliated with academics.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…
