The way students’ perceive his or her learning environment is vitally important. Current data indicates that a student’s behavior, attitude and motivation toward learning and academic achievement is directly tied to the learning environment (Asiyai, 2014). Therefore, when a positive environment is created, it can prevent or reduce misbehaviors from occurring and …show more content…
Having a structure that is predictable can alleviate anxiety some students may experience. Without a good understanding of how students should act during different transitional activities or settings they may feel insecure. As a result, misbehaviors are often related to transitioning from one activity to another (Hemmeter, Ostrosky, Artman, & Kinder 2008). School procedures must be carefully analyzed to determine if additional supports are needed for specific students. For some, challenging behaviors occur more frequently when there are too many transitions, or when transitions are too long (Hemmeter, et al., 2008). Other triggers may include changes to routines change, inadequate supports for students who need individualized reminders before the transition, or the lack of cues to indicate when one activity ends and one begins (Hemmeter, et al., 2008). It is important to explain the steps students must take during the transitioning period. These steps can be modeled, displayed on the wall, and verbal prompts can be repeated on a regular basis until mastery is achieved. Additional interventions can be added to the student’s individualized plan if …show more content…
The strategies used to address behavioral issues should enhance personal dignity and refrain from using methods that degrade personal worth or self-esteem (Carr et al., 2002). When these strategies fail to curb
Action Plan For Implementation
Assessing the classroom management plan periodically is part of maintaining an effective learning environment. When the implemented strategies above fail to alleviate problems, educators must evaluate the plan in place so issues can be addressed and changes can be made. They need to determine when, how and where the disruptive behaviors are occurring in the classroom (Guardina & Fullerton, 2010).
If misbehaviors are linked to a specific area, educators should consider the physical organization of the classroom. It is important to have a well-organized room and materials. Classroom elements such as the type of lighting, amount of space, or the arrangement of the furniture influence intellectual stimulation and educational development (Asiyai, 2014). Additionally, using chair bags, desks with components, and having desks that do not face windows can eliminate many distractions (Guardino & Fullerton,
