Civilization is the culture, society, and way of life of a particular area. People love to think that they are civilized , however, if the environment would change, as a result, behaviors will also change. Lord of the Flies is a perfect example of that ow easy humans, of any age, can go back to their uncivil and savage ways. William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies, gives the main characters and even objects , a symbol or something to represent. Ralph, the twelve year old protagonist, resembles democracy and order. Piggy, the heavy set asthmatic boy, symbolizes social order and using one’s intelligence rather than one’s impulses. The conch shell that Ralph and Piggy found symbolizes order, he who has the conch has the right to speak without being interrupted in the beginning of the book. However, as the book goes on the conch is destroyed and Piggy is killed by jack and his group, meaning the boys lost both all order and intelligence. Jack, the red twelve year old antagonist, represents dictatorial rule and savagery. Jack also represents the stereotype of red heads, which are no soul, and have bad temper. Jack envy's Ralph selection to be leader and eventually forms his own group, the hunters, which he leads. Jack believes he should be leader of the group because he is leader of the choir in the beginning of the story. The hunters are a group of ruthless savages which hunt for food. Roger , member of the choir, manifest himself as the sadist, someone who gets pleasure from seeing others in pain, of society. Roger realizes Simon, the ‘buffer, between Ralph and Jack, symbolizes pure goodness and serves as a Christ-figure. Sam and Eric, the identical twins, they represent the losing of someone’s self in the beginning of the book they have different mentalities but as the book progresses they become one, as far as the other kids start calling them “SamnEric.” As the book progresses the boys lose all characteristic as a civilization and go back by their human nature Atomic warfare has been used very little compared to other ways of warfare, but that does not mean the effects are less …show more content…
When pushed to the edge, humans can do some pretty savagery things, this has been evident throughout history. They are many things that lead these things to happen like savagery, submersion in the group, revenge, and even leaders. First, savagery cause savagery , for example, if someone is pushed they are more likely to push back. Throughout history is been seen this to be the case. One good example is when the US bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 after the Japanese attacked Pearl harbor in 1941. Second, submersion in group is when someone is consider less in important for any reason. When this submerged group gets tired of being unimportant they will act up and start revolting. The Civil rights movement is a perfect example of a submerged group acting up, especially when it comes to Malcolm X. Malcolm X’s philosophy was that if his people wanted to be treated respected they had to make people respect them through violence. Third, revenge……….. Fourth, Leaders throughout history there has been many cases where one single person has caused the pain of others. Hitler is one of the more recent examples of leaders committing human savagery, Hitler and the Germans killed thousands of people because of their believes. Hitler was very smart in becoming leader when the Germans were scared and weak, then eventually made a huge army throughout connections. Another example is 9/11, the
