The American Civil War was a crucial point in American history that affected the development of America. The Civil War defined what the nation was going to become in the future. It was a war the pitted brother against brother and father against son. It started on April 12, 1861 and lasted four long years until it finally ended on April 9, 1865. The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history, causing the loss of 625,000 lives. This statistic does not include the thousands of amputations and other permanent physical disabilities caused by battle wounds. These were the Gettysburg and Vicksburg Campaigns. Both of these campaigns were considered turning points in the Civil War. On July 1, 1863 the Battle of Gettysburg started in the town of Gettysburg, Pa. This battle, which would rage on until July 3, was the biggest and bloodiest battle of the Civil War. This battle was considered a turning point because it ended Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the North and it puts him back into the defensive. This battle also erased the Confederacy’s hope of gaining foreign support from other countries including Great Britain. The Siege of Vicksburg occurred from May 18 to July 4, 1863. During this siege, General Ulysses S Grant sieged the town of Vicksburg, Mississippi on the Mississippi River. On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. On April 26, 1865 General Joseph Johnston surrendered to General William Tecumseh Sherman at Bennett Place in Durham County, North Carolina. The final Battle of the Civil War occurred from May 12-13, 1865 in Cameron County, Texas. All Confederate soldiers and officers received pardons after the Civil War ended.
Though the Civil War was over the reconstruction of the country had just begun. It took the rest of the 1860’s and into the 1870’s to rebuild the country. This time period known as “Reconstruction” affected all of the 1860’s. The rest of the 1860’s were focused on rebuilding our nation. It was a very painful process. There was a lot of questions to be asked like, On what terms would the Confederacy be allowed back into the Union? Where would the Newly freed slaves?
