It is harder for the elders to see that this way of thinking was actually correct. If they would allow themselves in his shoes they would have had to make changes. It is easier to keep the status qua than it is to change and that is why he was an outcast in their eyes, in their hearts some probably thought of him as an hero, that would never be said.
I would have to believe that the author would like the readers to think about the novel and how their lives reflect it. If their lives reflect it, I believe his communication through this novel is. life may not be what you want it to be if you want change you will have to be willing to believe that it can happen and fight for it with every fiber of their being.
I also believe that he communicated that culture and traditions while they are valuable when they do not allow room for happiness that they are more destructive than anything. By allowing us to see one bird set free and another remaining caged it, it gives the reader a choice which one are
