Tom Taylor says that a concussion is a traumatic but recoverable condition, while CTE is an incurable degenerative disease. When a person suffers a head impact, the brain bashes and shakes around inside the skull. “Shearing forces stretch the membranes of the nerve fibers (axons) that connect the nerve cells (neurons) and, through a process that is not fully understood, trigger an energy crisis: Blood flow, which delivers glucose, is restricted at precisely the same time as the neurons’ demand for energy spikes.”(Taylor 77) Our brain in return shuts down areas on the brain which can last for long periods of time. With these hits, the brain then rattles inside the head which in return builds up, tau. Tau is an abnormal protein that forms in the brain and can slowly take over parts of the brain. Although NFL players aren’t the only people that suffer from these CTEs. There are known cases of CTEs in soccer players, baseball players, hockey players, even military veterans. CTEs were first discovered in boxers in the mid 1920’s, it was called “punch-drunk” syndrome. There is no way to diagnose a CTE in a living person. The only way to diagnose a CTE is with an autopsy. Gardner states there are many symptoms of CTEs. Some of these symptoms are the slowing of speech and behavioral change in the early stages. Then comes symptoms like paranoia, social withdrawal and aggression. The final and most severe …show more content…
With cases like Junior Seau and Dave Duerson had, it is clear that something needs to be done soon to prevent more and more people from developing this brain disorder. When a person receives repeated blows to the head, they can be at risk of developing a CTE. When you have a CTE, life becomes difficult for you. Your memory fades, you lose control of motor skills, you have terrible mood swings, and these symptoms can possibly drive you to suicide. There is no real way to diagnose someone with a CTE until they are deceased and can have an autopsy done on them. Researchers are currently trying to come up with solutions to help be able to diagnose these cases of CTE in living patients. There is so much time and effort being put into developing a diagnosis process and a cure for this disease, but there is nothing yet. For now all we can do is try to prevent people from getting CTEs. What we have done is for the NFL, there have been new rules enforced to help with the head impacts. The major change is The penalty and possible fine for targeting a player in the head or neck with a
