Firstly, much of the attention he received was based on emotional excitement rather than tangible achievements. The royal couple, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were enthusiastic about the natural animals and plants that he brought back, none of which gave Spain much economic development. It is only natural that one is amazed by the unknown, but such amazement is only based on childlike wonder and excitement. Imagine if the royal couple had already seen the animals and plants Columbus brought back: they would have been highly unimpressed. Secondly, the lucky timing of the printing press enabled information about Columbus to spread effectively and quickly. Such information allowed a larger mass of people to hear about Columbus whereas without the press, much less people would’ve heard about Columbus. Since the press informed a large mass of people about Columbus, he received a lot of media-praise and excitement. Furthermore, writings of the press had the unique ability to exaggerate stories in order to be more appealing, leading to more enthusiasm of common people. Lastly, as a whole, the expedition was a failure. As the writers of the article “Christopher Columbus” state, Columbus never fully achieved his ultimate grand plan of finding a direct trade route to the west between Europe to Asia. This schoolmate, let’s call her Julia, was once my close friend who now is part of the “popular clique” on campus. I imagined myself in her shoes at a late-night party, grudgingly dancing in the corner. I visualized people around me taking shots and pictured giving a meek smile when a so-called friend would shove a can of beer in my hand shouting for me to drink it. I felt Julia’s despair and hopelessness, wondering if hanging out with these people was worth it. I felt her guilt and regret in joining activities that she knew she was smarter than. I felt her insecurity and fear of others looking down on her if she didn’t wear certain clothes or act a certain way. I felt the pain in living such a constricted lifestyle with such limited freedom to express myself for who I really was. Rather than judging Julia and holding anger against her for being part of this group of people, I learned that beneath the makeup, partying, and booty shorts was the same silly, goofy friend that was now so trapped in maintaining her reputation that she felt too hopeless to fight for her
