Columbus set sail in 1492 and reached what he thought was the Indies in 30 days of sailing across the Atlantic. He landed in Hispaniola, and took back 10 indigenous people to convert to christianity. Colombus would come back and attempt to settle the land with a thousand men but fails. Later on a man named Nicola de Ovando arrived with two thousand five hundred men and established the first permanent base for spain. Spain took an early lead in European expansion. As Spain’s reach grew, so did its problems with the indigenous people of the new land they had discovered. The Spanish were taking the indigenous people and forcefully converting them to their catholic faith and also making them learn spanish as well. They did end up settling in the Mid Atlantic region of the east coast of America.It’s early attempt to colonize failed because early and forced neglection. The first colony of Roanoke had run low on supplies John White sailed back to get very much needed supplies but was halted by a ongoing war with the Spanish. This would ultimately lead to the colony of Roanoke’s Downfall. After sometime they would try again and settle in the chesapeake but this time it was given much more attention and had a steady flow of new settlers to replace the ones that would die. The English men and women faced many hardships but would prevail and land the groundwork for what many more colonies in it’s
