Although Adeline’s life has equal parts neglect and love, the happy times help her rise above her abusive family. Adeline didn’t stay late to campaign for class president because she was afraid of what Niang would do if she wasn’t home in time. Wu Chun-mei tells Adeline ‘Don’t worry! I’ll win this thing for you!’ This expresses Wu Chun-mei really cares, as she says she will ‘win this thing’ for Adeline. It shows how strong their friendship is and how much one of them is willing to do to please the other. Through this quote Adeline shows how respected and loved she was at school.
Adeline gets physically and emotionally neglected by her stepmother, Niang. This is shown when Niang was ‘suffused with rage’ and ‘she slapped [Adeline]’. Niang also told Adeline that she was ‘manipulative’ and that she ‘should be sent away.’ Neglect is shown when ‘[Niang] slapped [Adeline’s] face so hard [she] almost fell’.
