These are big stone shapes that look like people. These moai were made out of volcanic rock. There are many of these sculptures around. They may be found in rows, toppled over, or broken. People have found out some of the history to why this settlement feel apart, but we really don't know how or why the moai were made. The residence of this Island live in the town of Hanga Roa. From there it is not too far to drive to see the moai. In the town of Rono Raraku one can 70 of these statues rising from the ground. Close by there is a volcanic crater that has remains of lots more. This would have been were they were shaped from. How they got them moved, we do not know. Chile use to be controlled by the Incas in the north and the Araucanos in the south. In 1541, a Spanish man named Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago. In 1818, Chile was able to get their Independence from Spain with the help of Bernardo O'Higgins and José de San Martin. O'Higgins then became the dictator until 1823 and laid the foundations for a state with two parties and a central government. This is the day that they celebrate their Independence. This day was chosen because in 1810 that was the day that they started down the road for Independence, though that dream was not fulfilled till February 1818. Parades, which include their traditional cowboys, dances, drinking,traditional food and music are all part of their celebrations.
