The readings for today’s lesson were chapters 3 and 4 from the book “Maternity Rolls” by Heather Kuttai. The chapters tell Kuttai’s journey through pregnancy and childbirth. From what Kuttai states, it seems as if pregnancy was a very difficult time for her, emotionally and physically. It was difficult emotionally because although Kuttai and her spouse were very excited to be pregnant, not everyone was equally excited for or supportive of them. Kuttai states “I saw the man ultrasounds as many opportunities to see the sex, but I was terribly disappointed when my ultrasound technician refused to pass this knowledge on to our doctor, and therefore on to us.…

From the beginning, newborn girls had a substantial disadvantage compared to their male counterparts risking of being abandoned based on the gender discrimination (251). My area that I intend to major in is neonatal nursing because it’s been my dream to be a nurse where I get to help people who are in need, but to be a neonatal nurse is where my heart has fallen into. One huge reason why I am driven to become a neonatal nurse is because my experience with neonates is a tough one as I had lost my newborn sister on a tuesday of August 16 of 2016 (this date is ingrained in my head forever) to nothing. Doctors gave no explanation to why she died, one minute her heartbeat is higher than 100 beats per minute and the next minute it was dropping down to 95- 85 beats per minute. With a hope of getting my sister 2 months before her due date and finally getting a chance to welcome her after 13 years of trying, my mom was rushed down to labor and delivery while the staff all sprinted down to help. I never thought I would hold a dead newborn in my hands, especially my sister.…

Immigrant women who have spent five years in Canada “have almost twice as many children of pre-school age (as) the average Canadian-born woman,” according to an extensive study by two noted economists. The University of Waterloo’s Ana Ferrer and Princeton University’s Alicia Adsera pored over two decades of Statistics Canada census data to reach their conclusion. There are major birthrate differences depending on newcomers’ country of origin: The women who have the highest birthrates tend to be from Africa, Pakistan and India.…

Early diagnosis of postpartum depression is very important because it has an effect on how an infant is progressed early on in life, but what is more important is it can also affect how that child grows emotionally later on in life. The health of an infant is determined by the work that parents put in, and a depressed mother is sometimes unable to provide what is needed. As a child grows they tend to mimic the emotions that they see and with a depressed mother those emotions can effect how that child develops. This is why it is essential to implement screenings for all mothers before leaving the hospital and also at their check-up visits. The key to correcting this problem is realizing that it is something that can affect any mother no matter…
