Introduction Questions: The research question is, “What is the effect of sugar and salt solution on the chemotaxis of planaria?” This research question is worth asking to see if planarians have an affinity toward salt or sugar solutions. By studying different types of organisms, we are better able to see the type of environment that organisms like to live in. This allows us to have a better understanding of organisms today especially the Platyhelminthes or other flatworms. What this question teaches us about biology is that it shows us the effects that the systems of Platyhelminthes have while being in different types of solutions. This particular organism …show more content…
For this experiment, instead of making a salt water solution, sea water was used. For the sugar water, 2 M Glucose was used and it was diluted to 0.5 M glucose. First, the 15 choice chambers were set up, then, the planarians were separated in the containers. Ten planarians were put onto each side of one container. One of these containers includes two separate sides. The planarians were separated by using a Pasteur pipet. Three different variables were tested. The three types of variables were sugar vs. sea water, sugar vs. control, and the sea water vs. the control. The control is the water that the planarians live in. Five choice chambers contained one side of the sea water with the other side of the control. The five other choice chambers contained one side of sugar water with the other side of the control. Finally, the last five choice chambers contained one side of the sea water and the other with sugar water. About 15 mL of each solution was added to each side of the choice chamber. In the middle of each choice chamber, ten planarians were added and for an hour these planarians were observed to see where the planarians move …show more content…
If this were done, I think it would give us better results. Also, if this were to be done again, I would think about checking the movement of the planarians every 15 minutes to see if they first preferred a particular solution and then moved to the other side. I would do this to see how long they stayed in a particular solution and then moved due to their
