One literary device that is presented in this passage is parallelism. Parallelism is the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same; or similar in their construction, sound, meaning or meter. The word that conveys parallelism is Death. Death is announced 9 times. Thus, this word is emitting the fact that any criminal was sentenced to death; from stealing horses, to opening someone else’s mail will end one’s life. Foreshadowing is a warning or indication of a future event. Death is restated over and over again. The lives of many people were taken away from these individuals.
