Maximus tries to know how Marcus died, but Commodus tells him that is in his sleep and there is no pain. Commodus adds “Take my hand Maximus the emperor asks for your loyalty” (Gram 17). Maximus leaves the tent immediately because he realizes that Commodus is the reason in the emperor's death. Commodus gives five guards an order to kill Maximus before sunrise. The guards led Maximus down a hill. The guards prepared to kill him, but Maximus realizes that the guards do not have enough experience because they are young. So, Maximus manipulates by using his strength and kills the guards (Gram, 2008).
