The Nuu-chah-nulth people are a group of First Nations. Firstly, they live on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and are divided into 14 Nations. The 14 Nations are then divided into 3 regions: Southern Region, Central Region, and Northern Region. The Ditidaht Nation, Huu-ay-aht Nation, Hupacasath Nation, Tse-shaht Nation, and Uchucklesaht Nation belong to the Southern Region. The Ahousaht Nation, Hesquiaht Nation, Tla-o-qui-aht Nation, Toquaht Nation, and Yuu-cluth-aht Nation belong to the Central Region. And lastly, the Ehattesaht Nation, Kyuquot/Cheklesaht Nation, Mowachat/Muchalaht Nation, and Nuchatlaht Nation belong to the Northern Region. There are about 6,300 Nuu-chah-nulth people who live off the reserve in communities across North America. Secondly, the Nuu-chah-nulth people follow their ancestors’ way of life and beliefs. They seek wisdom/knowledge from their elders and look upon their children when they need a reason to succeed. They are guided by n’aas (creator) and ha’wiih (hereditary Chief). Although many people share the same past traditions, languages, and their way of life, they were divided into chiefly families, local groups, and eventually, into Nations. Each Nation has a hereditary chief and live with resources provided by their chiefly territories. They trade, barter, and sell their values and resources.
