Many people believe that with certainty we can accomplish anything we desire, if work put into it of course. However, I believe that is not the case because one will never be certain, it’s just an illusion in one’s mind. For example, I applied for two jobs last summer; Questers’ Way and Footlocker. I was very excited to start working at Questers’ Way because it gives me the opportunity to work with children. I was not certain that I wanted to work there at the beginning because it seemed too easy for me to work with children and communicate with them at a level we could all comprehend. Taking the job, I was certain I was going to be a great employee because I was so convinced I had all the skills to be one. However, that was not the case when I started to work, I had a rough time trying to get the children’s attention and even playing with them. If I was doubtful, I would have asked how to do so and even learn on my own. Being doubtful in this case would’ve helped me become an exceptional employee because I would’ve learned but I did not do so. Having my certainty too high made my job tougher and prevented me to increase my communication skills. In a Ted Talk, Tim Harford presented a presentation called “Trial, Error, and the God Complex”, Harford states an idea how the God Complex one thinks, “ Here in my little world, I am a god, I understand everything. I do not want my opinions challenged. I do not want to have my conclusions tested”. Being certain about things is something that only we imagine, we want to conclude, we are certain because it makes us confident and provides relief. This imagination goes back to how a God Complex would think, the mind wants to be right so there is no room for proving it’s wrong nor does it want to be challenged. Thinking we are certain all the time, makes us create a bubble around us that prevents us from learning and growing.
