The government has created propaganda to force people to believe that firemen always burned books and that houses were always fireproof. In fact, this is not true. In the past houses were not fireproof and firemen actually put out fires instead of creating them. The government created this lie to generate an excuse that will clear their society of books. The actual firemen do not know the history of their own profession. Even Beatty, the fire chief, gets many facts wrong about the fireman’s history. The government has created a mechanical hound to fill its citizens with fear. They use the mechanical hound to track down people that break their laws, and when the hound captures the suspect, it injects the suspect with a needle filled with a lethal amount morphine or procaine. The government uses the mechanical hound to keep everyone docile and fearful to oppose their regime. If everyone is docile and scared to oppose them, the people in power will be able to enact whatever laws they want, no matter how ludicrous the law may be. They have already passed laws that prohibit owning books, walking around, and driving under fifty-five miles per hour. Everyone obeys these laws because they fear the mechanical hound will come after them and inject with morphine. They also pump fear into people by televising events where the mechanical hound captures people. After Guy Montag was suspected of owning books and murdering Beatty, the police force used a mechanical hound to track him down. As the search for Montag was going on, the mechanical hound lost his scent and it appeared that Montag had evaded being captured. The people in power did not like this so, they looked for a scapegoat to replace Montag. They found a random pedestrian, but they said it was Montag that they found. The government could not let the citizens see the mechanical hound fail. They released the mechanical
