Cell phones are durable communication devices whose popularity has increased significantly since their first arrival over four decades ago in 1973. Cell phones transmit and receive radio-frequency electromagnetic waves which are the weakest waves in the electromagnetic spectrum with the lowest frequency but the biggest wavelength in the spectrum. This type of electromagnetic radiation is less dangerous than higher frequency electromagnetic radiation at immediate contact as it is non-ionizing however there has been debate over the long term effects of radio-frequency waves on the human body, particularly those which are found in cell phones which are devices that are constantly in contact or very close proximity with the human …show more content…
Non-ionizing radiation has not provided evidence that it increases cancer risk and although radio-frequency energy has the ability to heat, this effect is not significant enough to raise the body temperature of the user. Also, the radiation that is found in cell phones is too low for it to cause significant damage to the user; therefore there should be no need for a written health risk for the consumer thus making it potentially ethical for cell phone companies to exclude it. An extensive study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health found that there was no evidence confirming that the low-frequency radiation transmitted by cell phones caused any negative health effects. The study also concluded that cell phone radiation is below the threshold which would prove dangerous enough to cause the excitation of nerve cells or the breaking down of DNA which is required for a cancer to form. The absence of a written warning would then be …show more content…
Radio-frequency waves easily penetrate brick as well as metal and up to 80% of the radiation from the cell phone has been seen to be able to penetrate about 6cm into the adult brain. When it is considered that children, particularly those that are still in the process of development, have much thinner scalps and skulls, it can be concluded that the radiation will be able to penetrate much deeper than into that of an adult and can even affect their bodies much more than adults as their cells multiply at a much faster rate than that of adults. Through an experiment done on mice whereby pregnant mice were exposed to the low frequency radiation found in cell phones and others were not. The mice offspringthat were exposed to the radiation experienced increased hyperactivity as well as decreased memory. This experiment illustrated the effect that cell phone radiation experienced during pregnancy may cause hyperactivity and decreased memory in the babies which were born. Because of these effects, the sale of cell phones without written health warnings for the consumers cannot be seen as being
