Cave Lions are amazing and fascinating creatures. I chose Cave Lions because today’s lions are fierce warriors that are the king of the plains and I wanted to compare them to prehistoric lions. Let’s go learn about Cave Lions!

These awesome animals lived in the late pleistocene to modern era. Their scientific name is panthera leo spelaea but their common name is the Cave Lion. Cave Lions didn't actually get their name because they lived in caves. They got their name because numerous cave lion skeletons were found inside cave bear territory.

Cave Lions had very powerful limbs, a large size, and possibly manes and stripes. They communicated by yelping, growling, and roaring. With powerful limbs and large size, they most likely were not very fast. Scientists believe Cave Lions were ambush predators. They

Some of the mountains may have looked like a broad arrowhead shape. The forest may have looked like what we know as the forests of today. Fossils have been found scattered throughout Europe and Asia. Archeologists discovered fossils as far west as Great Britain and France and as far east as the Bering Strait and Siberia.

Cave Lions are extinct but the living African lion shares many of its characteristics such as hunting and getting into fights with other animals. They also had rounded ears and tufted tails. My research shows that Cave Lions are larger than African lions. They also could have had stripes as evidenced by cave paintings, unlike the modern African lion.

Some websites say Cave Lions lived from 500,000 - 2,000 years ago. If that is right, they would have died out in 16 A.D. Cave Lions may have been hunted to extinction by humans and neanderthals. Apart from using their meat to eat, early humans skinned the Cave Lions to use their pelt for many different reasons.
