Causes Of Poverty In My Life

Improved Essays
Let me tell you a story about a little girl with freckles. She wore hand me down clothes and didn’t have many things to call her own. One thing she did have was the determination to succeed. My mom had the misfortune of living in poverty as a child. Her home was a run down, one-bedroom house which she shared with her parents and sister. There are many causes of poverty, one prevalent cause being drugs and alcohol. Her parents were alcoholics and spent most of their time in a bar, leaving my mom to raise her sister. Many of my mom’s extended family had drug and alcohol problems as well, leaving her no real stable adults in her life. My mom had to cook for and take care of her sister and herself from the age of 8. With little adult support at …show more content…
Sadly she didn’t have many opportunities to do so. My mom only did one extracurricular activity in high school and that was swim team and she was only able swim because her friends also swam and their parents could give my mom a ride. She had no access to transportation because her parents didn’t care enough to drive her to practice. They didn’t see the importance of extracurricular activities. Without a carpool, she would have never been able to do that activity. Schools offer opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities. For children who live in poverty, it can be harder for them to participate in these activities, whether it is because of transportation, money, or other factors. Having experience with extracurricular activities can be very helpful on college resumes and make them more appealing. I think that it is very important for all children to be in one extracurricular activity or another. Whether it be a sport, chess team, robotics, or another activity. I think it makes children more involved in school and can provide them a way to get into college through scholarship and gives them a fighting chance to earn a scholarship. I play two sports because my parents support me by driving to and from practices and coming to my games to support me. It is a big time commitment, but it is very encouraging when your parents are there to support …show more content…
It is not a life sentence. If you are a determined individual, you can work hard and get yourself out of poverty and into the middle class, or even better. There needs to be a bigger emphasis in schools to help the children who suffer from poverty. They need to be successful to be able to contribute to society and be successful rather than perpetuate the cycle of poverty. My mom is a perfect example of this. She grew up in poverty, but early on realized that education was the key to a better life. She studied up, went to college, and became a teacher. Being the only person in her family to go to college, she proved that it is possible to break the cycle of poverty and make something better about your life even when the circumstances may be grim. Education can be the ticket to a new life for many children in poverty and the solution is hard work and perseverance. Charles B. Rangel says it best, “A quality education grants us the ability to fight the war on ignorance and

In the film Bowling for Columbine, they use poverty, the media, and extreme violence to illustrate the effects it has on the citizens of America, and what minors are doing to contribute to the violence, and why. One of topic they investigated extensively in this documentary was the media and how it compares to that of other countries, and how it could be influencing the huge number of gun deaths in America. Some Americans try to push the point that not many Canadians are colored, or that Canadians don’t watch as many horror movies, play as many violent video games, or don’t have access to as many firearms, but in reality, it’s the exact opposite. Canada is home to many people of color, and is exposed to just as much violence in movies and games, and most families in Canada own a gun of sorts.…

My mother always stressed to me that there were two types of people in the world; those who sit back and deal with what life throws their way, and those who go out and get what they want at all cost. I am the latter. As the daughter of a single teen mom, I have endured my share of triumphs and misfortunes. Growing up in a dead-end and poverty-stricken community known, ironically, as Rich Square, North Carolina, with a population of about 900, I am no stranger to disparities. I can vividly remember sleeping without heat in the coldest of winters and going to school on the first day without any of the name brand clothing that my friends would own, but in the midst of all that encompassed my home life, I persevered.…

Canada is a nation of immigrants. As such, it is not surprising that there is considerable interest in how immigrants fare in the Canadian labour market, as well as in society at large. The incidence of poverty among immigrants (nearly half of whom are visible minorities), namely, recent immigrants - defined as those who arrived in Canada in the previous 5 years - has been growing (Statistics Canada as cited in Samuel and Basavarajappa, 2006). According to a 2012 Canadian Labour Market Report, more than 36 per cent of immigrants who have been in the country for less than five years live in poverty (Dungan, Fang, and Gunderson, 2012). Understanding why this is the case is of particular importance today, in light of the recent and continuing…

A large portion of the public does not understand why people live in poverty, and believe it is because they do not work hard enough; but this is simply not true. There are countless causes of poverty that people do not often recognize such as, inadequate job opportunities (especially in inner cities), lack of education, being raised in poverty as a child, mental and physical illness or disease, and many others. Poverty is often the root to other social problems as well such as crime, drugs, and the prison system, to just name a few. People or families who are living in poverty and do not have enough money to survive often turn to crime because they see no other options. With a lack of jobs in inner cities, there are often no way for these people to make enough money to eat other than selling drugs.…
