As the years go on, the rate of obesity has continued to increase. Obesity is a problem in America that accounts for more than one-fifth of adults (Borrell and Samuel, pg. 514). Obesity can cause serious health problems, which can lead to respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease and early mortality (Ashraf et al., 2011). Everyday people lose their lives due to obesity. The reason obesity has continued to increase is due to lack of exercise, too much time watching TV or playing videogames, and poor eating habits. People nowadays would rather grab fast food than cook a meal at home. Fast food is fast and convenient, but it is very bad for one’s health. Because people have heavily relied on fast food, obesity rates have continued to increase. Even on TV, all I see are commercials for fast food, rather than a commercial that promotes healthy eating. When parents pick up these bad eating habits they also transfer them to their children. Many children in our society today would rather eat fast food or junk food than a healthy or home cooked meal. According to Andrea Bombak, obesity leads to a number of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and even types of cancers (63). All these diseases are very serious diseases, and should not be overlooked. All these diseases are serious because they can lead to mortality. The cardiovascular system is a very important system in the human body, which needs to be well taken care of in order to survive. Being obese really takes away from having a cardiovascular system that functions the way it is designed to. Data from NHANES shows how out of 61% of those that were obese, 49% of them had at least one cardiovascular disease (Bombak 63). This shows us how the majority of those who were obese were affected by a cardiovascular disease. In order for the number of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases to decrease, obesity rates must also decrease.
