On September 11th, 2001, 19 members with the Islamic extremist group, al-Qaeda, hijacked four airliners and selected symbolic targets to attack in the United States. Two of the planes flew into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C. Then the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The U.S. capital building was the intended target for the hijackers in the fourth plane according to interviews with two al Qaeda leaders. Our economy plunged into debt following the attacks. There was no money left for politics and studies show that many people increased their drug and alcohol use. The way we travel on airplanes will never be the same. We are now forced to have a severe surveillance before entering onto a plane.
