On September 11 2001, 19 men linked with the terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked four planes and crashed them into important targets in the United States. The planes hit the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon outside Washington D.C and a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks, nicknamed 9/11, claimed thousands of human lives and caused major destruction.
In the aftermath of the attacks, the U.S initiated several anti-terror measures to prevent something like this ever happening again.

Others had arrived just a few months before. On the day of the attacks, the 19 terrorists boarded four planes headed for California on three different East Coast airports. Right after takeoff, the terrorist hijacked the plane using knifes and box cutters, effectively turning the four commercial planes into missiles. At 8.45 in the morning, the first plane crashed into one of the skyscrapers in the World Trade Center, killing hundreds of people instantly. Eighteen minutes later, another plane crashed into its twin. This crash caused a massive explosion, and burning debris showered over the surrounding buildings. An hour later, at 9.45 a.m., a third plane crashed into the Pentagon building outside Washington D.C. Jet fuel from the plane caused a massive fire that led to structural collapse. Fifteen minutes after the D.C attack, the south tower in New York collapsed. 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in this attack. Nearly 3,000 people died and over 10,000 people were treated for injuries in New York City. The plane that landed in the Pennsylvanian field never reached its goal. The passenger heard about the New York City attacks before takeoff and rose up against the terrorists. Instead of landing at another prominent site, they crash-landed in the field, and all 45 people onboard …show more content…
In 2013, former NSA subcontractor Edward Snowden released secret government files that detailed the clandestine government surveillance of the citizens. A year later, the Washington Post acquired a black budget report from Snowden, which described the layout of the 16 government spy agencies and the 107,000 people employed in the agencies. Other reports state that the NSA alone has taken 56,000 emails by Americans with no connection to terrorism annually sine 2008. The reveal of these files caused a rising distrust in government in many Americans. According to a study done by Pew Research, the trust in government hit a high right after the attacks, but soon dwindled. The governmental surveillance, combined with the 2008 recession, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the growing political divide made the people’s trust in the government fall beneath 20 percent by 2013. In 2014, a Gallup poll put this number at 24
