Cause And Effect Essay On Pearl Harbor

The Pearl Harbor Incident took place on December 7, 1941 on the Naval Base stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The incident was a surprise attack from the Imperial Japanese Navy that killed approximately 1,177 United States sailors. The Japanese also succeeded in destroying several United States vessels in the process. The attack was caused by the severing of trade by the United States with the Japanese and the refusal to abandon the Chinese. The Japanese government intended for the attack to serve as a precautionary measure to prevent the United States from interfering with their affairs in Southeastern Asia. This incident not only caused the United States to be pulled into the war, but also greatly altered strategic methods of the United States Navy at the time of World War II and in the present. Prior to the attack, the United States Naval forces mostly operated in the Atlantic Ocean due to the German activity and the alliance with Great Britain and France. After the Pearl Harbor attack, the United States Naval Forces shifted to the Pacific Ocean to combat the Japanese. Overcoming the Imperial Japanese Navy would prove to be difficult in the beginning. The United States Naval forces had suffered great losses from the attack, however, the United States Naval aircraft carriers had survived most of the attack. United States had to recover from the crippling attack by rapidly increasing in the construction and repair of the American Naval vessels. The attack not only proved to the United States government that carriers would be reliable throughout the war, but also created the strategic platform for the remainder of the World War in the Pacific.
