In the 1960s to the early 1970s, one of the worst cases of child abuse happened in California. Dave Pelzer wrote about his story, telling of some of the torturous things that his mom put him through, including neglection, but did none of those things to Dave’s other brothers. Dave received the punishment of his brothers’ wrongdoings instead (Pelzer 29). His mother even forced Dave, but not his siblings, to wear the same clothes everyday for a long period of time to humiliate Dave (6). If he did not finish his chores in time, he would get no breakfast, which would consist of leftovers from his brothers’ meals. His tiny meals were scraps, just like a dog’s. Even a spoiled dog might be better fed than Dave Pelzer. He would even rather take a hit than be starved (3-4). Favoritism unfortunately leads to strained sibling relationships, just like Dave’s. Dave was best friends with his brother at school, but they had an understanding to avoid each other while at home
