With this experiment intend to prove Salem Lakes ability to buffer chemicals used in the water treatment process versus that of the Yadkin River. Using a jar test machine, simulated the addition of an acid in the form of Al2SO4, and a base NaOH to the coagulation process. Salem Lake does show a preferred buffering at higher acid doses, though Yadkin River is more efficient at the low to mid-range dose. INTRODUCTION There is a distinct difference in the buffering capacity of Salem Lake versus Yadkin River.…
The emergency plan for VT calls for an official ‘ERC’ emergency response coordinator to ‘direct’ a response. It also calls for a command post ‘Emergency Operations Center’ (EOC) there had been multiple operation centers but not an actual EOC which was detrimental in planning and conducting action. There are two groups; The Policy Group and the Emergency Response Resources Group. Of which the policy group is in charge of supporting the emergency response and dealing with recovery procedures.…
Coliscan easygel nutrient broth was stored in the freezer. Around 24 hours prior to sampling, the broth was moved to the refrigerator to thaw. The sampling procedure follows the procedure stated in the Coliscan Easygel Instructions. When we were ready to begin sampling, the thawed broth was placed into a cooler. We started sampling at Cornerstone pond then move to the Wyoming site, then downtown Grand Rapids, then Plainfield, and then Versluis lake.…
Somehow after Harry took a long stem shower causing him to sweat out all the drugs still active in his system he made it to his sales pitch on time and looked presentable. Although Harry was definitely still impaired during his pitch. He was slurring his words and could barely stand up. Kyle pulled Harry out to the hall and told him that his performance was inexcusable and that he was not only not going to receive his promotion, he was also fired. John managed to close the deal even after Harry's atrocious attempt at delivering a thoughtful sales pitch.…
On Saturday, April 21, I participated in the Earth day event at the Superfund site on the Duwamish River. I had an opportunity to speak with James Rasmussen of the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group (DRCC/TAG) about some of the challenges of working with such a diverse group of stakeholders and coming up with common goals for the restoration. James explained that one of the preliminary goals of the project was to include the people living in communities that are impacted by the condition of the river, and ensure their voices are heard. He spoke about BJ Cummings, who founded the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition in 2001 to represent and empower the Duwamish Valley's diverse resident, immigrant, fishing, recreational, environmental,…
BVID’s final year of collecting property taxes was in 2012 because that is the year all the bonds for constructing the dam were paid in full. However, because of the District’s prudent financial management, the payment on the bonds was substantially less than the property tax revenue toward the end of the 50-year payoff, and those savings were applied toward critical District maintenance. The absence of property taxes in 2013 created a deficit that was absorbed by extraordinary revenues including lucrative conserved water transfers.…
Osmosis is the net movement of water towards higher concentration. In osmosis experiment, water likes to diffuse from an area of low-solute concentration to an area of high-solute concentration. The purpose of the osmosis experiment was to observe the diffusion of solutes and the osmosis of water through a semipermeable membrane, which was dialysis tubing. This experiment was done to examine, if the solution is hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic.…
The purpose of creating this scientific investigation was to see which type of shoe would kick a soccer ball the furthest. The hypothesis for this project was, “If the type of shoe affects the ball’s distance traveled when kicked, then the cleat will kick the ball the furthest.” The independent variable was the type of shoe. The dependent variable was the distance the ball traveled. The way the responding or dependent variable was measured was the distance the ball has traveled.…
I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet with your site supervisor Daniel Thursday, October 8th to discuss the off take ditch the village has recently installed at the back of the mill property. I just wanted to touch base with you and make sure that we would receive help from you in clearing out some of the wood chips in the area and creating a swale to help the flow of water reach the ditch. Having the water reach the ditch without obstruction will help it leave your site without traveling to the neighboring property. Daniel also mentioned that snow is piled during the winter time around the area and that there would be no problem leaving enough space for the runoff to make its way to the ditch. We hope by having this,…
In the Chicago Tribune article, “As Other Cities Dig Up Pipes Made Of Toxic Lead, Chicago Resists,” the author discusses Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s efforts to modernize Chicago’s aging and deteriorating water system; however, as other cities prefer to tackle the root problem and replace the toxic lead pipes altogether, Rahm prefers to resist this approach and, instead, continue with his original project that will only help to increase lead exposure to Chicagoans. While, at first glance, this dilemma appears to only be a health-related one, upon further analysis, it can certain be argued that this case showcases health as a political issue that involves structures of power, especially in relation to race. According to the article, “Towards a politics…
In his short story “So Much Water So Close to Home,” Raymond Carver criticizes the lack of sensitivity society has in regards to the power imbalances between men and women by depicting domestic discord and a community’s response to violence that specifically targets women. The reader is introduced to gendered modes of experiencing the world since the story is told from the wife’s perspective instead of her husband’s. Carver’s narrative choice to frame the story from the perspective of Claire, places the reader into Claire’s shoes to piece together how small instances create her overall psychological turmoil. Claire’s relationship with Stuart perpetuates the demise of her psychological health since she feels uncomfortable to explicitly…
