It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Carolyn Komatsoulis of Maryland. She recently completed her summer internship at the Guilford Keeping Society, a non-profit historical society in Connecticut. The challenge for her was to provide us with a workable online archive so that we will be able to share and make public some of the over 10,000 historic images of Guilford housed in our photography collection.
Speaking on behalf of the Society, we were all most impressed with Carolyn's technical work, the website she developed for us, as well as the quality of her final presentation. She has provided us with an invaluable tool that will have a lasting impact on our Society.
After assessing our needs and desires regarding user friendliness, navigation, aesthetics, ability to perform Google searches, etc., she provided us with a list of possible approaches and made a number of recommendations. From these we selected an Omeka platform upon which to build the website. For example, she encouraged us to use the Dublin core of labelling online archival items which ensures that the archived photographs can be searched for on a web browser. She had the analytical insight to incorporate special features not found on most other online photo archives: a forum section, which enables the public to comment on items in the collection, thus enabling us to tap into the immense source of information held by the
