On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves. My cabin and I got the honor of being a cabin that would help a disabled person hike the mountain. On my vacation at Carolina Point, helping a disabled guy, Brad, climb up a mountain made me feel proud and accomplished.

We get to where the starting point of the hike is and we see about five sets of plywood with rope around them. These sets of plywood and rope was the chariot we would use to carry our assigned person to carry. An instructor came over and started to show us how it would work. There would be 4 people at a time, two in the front and two in the back, carrying the chariot with the disabled person in the middle strapped in. At a later point I talked to Jacob; he said that he kept thinking to himself how this would work and worried about the strength of the rope in the middle. Once everyone got situated, they brought over the guy that we would be carrying all the way up the mountain. His name was Brad, he had a bad knee, and he was almost 300 pounds. Right then we knew that it was not going to be a cake walk walking all the way up the mountain. But we were still in high spirt; we knew that we were changing this kid’s life by helping him hike a mountain. They assistants and instructors came over and started to strap Brad in his harness. They struggled with him for a while trying to get him comfortable for the long hike. Once everyone was ready to start the hike, we did our first pick up. It looked like the guys were struggling at first, but once they the plywood on their shoulders it looked much better. Getting Brad up and ready to go for the hike was heartwarming in all of our

We were almost ready to go. There were a few very quibbling moments as we transitioned from the security of the van to the thought of an open trail, a feeling probably comparable to the to the reluctance of diving into a cold lake. I relied on the van door pillar for balance as I groped for my poles, trying my best to hide these difficulties. I don't think that we were really looking at each other now, but through the side of my eyes I believed my daughter tumbled backwards as she was putting on her backpack, fortunately not to the ground. I am almost certain that, like me and despite her practice drill the night earlier, she was also not fully prepared for the weight.…

I was born with Bladder Exstrophy, a rare abnormality present at birth in which the bladder and associated structures are improperly formed and occurs in 1 out of 50,000 births. Throughout my childhood I’ve had 14 surgeries to make my life as “normal” as can be. To manage my situation it requires very different techniques just to empty my bladder and to prevent serious infections. Recognizing the need to help support me and others with this anomaly, my parents organized an annual support group camp out.…

Seeing that smile on their face when they accomplish a certain task after the countless struggles and setbacks they have endured is the greatest reward of all. “We have a long way to go Julie. We have to push ourselves to reach the site before dark.” As much as I worried about our remaining daylight hours, the weight of the backpack was my genuine concern. Ten minutes ago I thought it was a minor aggravation, but now it had grown into full fledged burden, consequently placing the entire hike into jeopardy. Nevertheless I thought it best to hike another mile of two, and ease into a comfortable stride before speaking to Julie.…
