Throughout high school, I was involved in a number or extra curricular activities that involved learning about marketing. As a part of The Future Business Leaders of America, I learned the many different skills that go into becoming a successful marketer in any field. Marketing focuses on the challenges of targeting an audience and finding what interests the consumer. In sports, the main objective of marketing is to market the brand itself, which would be the sports themselves. As an executive of a professional sports franchise, my job would consist of many different marketing campaigns that target the mass audience of sports fans across the nation. For example, the best form of marketing in Major League Baseball is to use the players involved in the sport to promote the brand. One of the most recent and more successful marketing campaigns in Major League Baseball included the sports top stars such as, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Miguel Cabrera, and Jose Bautista in a commercial that targeted baseball viewers across the nation with breast cancer awareness. The goal of the commercial was to connect the brand name Major League Baseball with breast cancer awareness by having the players share stories of breast cancer survivors. However, in reality professional sports have a much greater effect on society as a whole. There are children all over the world that are strongly influenced by the professional sports industry. When they watch professional sports on television or in person, they become more and more interested in playing the sport. The industry is built on the premise of reaching an audience of young children that will work to become great athletes in the sport that they wish to play professionally. Consequently, not every child who dreams or making it to the pros get there, but the ones that don’t play the game become involved in the business aspect of it. Those people are the ones who drive the growth of the industry. The players play the game, but there would be no game to play without the organizations themselves and the leagues they play in. It’s important for people to understand that professional sports have an impact not only in the entertainment industry but also in the lives of many kids and teens across the globe. The career path I have chosen will come with many risks and rewards; there will be challenges along the way and job security becomes one of my greatest fears in this industry. I will strive to enter the upper echelon of general managers in professional sports history. I cannot imagine a more fulfilling moment in my future than the day I finally reach my goal.
