Francis was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant and lived a fairly privileged life. When he was 20 years old he had to fight in the military against a neighboring area of Perugia. Francis was taken as a prisoner of war after his town of Assisi lost the conflict (Danteworlds). Once freed, he decides to leave his military career and reject his merchant heritage. Francis believed that he had a calling from God to help the church, this calling caused him to strip naked and denounce his father and family. He vowed to never see them again and to live a life of poverty. Francis then went on to live a life full of many adventures. These adventures included trips to the Holy Land, and Egypt (Danteworlds). It is believed that one of the reasons Francis might have been talked about by Dante when he was on the sun is because one of his most famous writings was the Canticle of Brother Sun “in which he praises God for providing humankind with the beauty and beneficent resources of the natural world. In this writing Francis refers to as his siblings including brother sun, sister moon, brother wind, and sister water” (Danteworlds). Francis died near his home town of Assisi in his favorite church, in 1228 Pope Gregory IX declared him as sainthood
