Background: Science laboratories should be used over demonstrations and worksheets because of a higher retention rate, about 75%, of information. Also, engaging students makes learning hands-on minds-on which is part of the How People Learn framework. Student engagement and retention is the reason that the How People Learn framework should be incorporated into science laboratories as it increases student learning. The four components of this framework are learner-centeredness, knowledge-centeredness, assessment-centeredness, and community-centeredness. Learner-centeredness is making the instruction, laboratory, or assignment about the student instead of the teacher. Knowledge-centeredness is learning with understanding not memorization that focuses on a …show more content…
Add 1 or 2 more candles to the clay for a total of 4 to 5 candles. Light the candles in the bowl. While the candles are still burning, place the pint size mason jar over the candles in the bowl. Carefully observe the base of the container, the water level in the container, and the flames. Record your observations. Remove the jar from the bowl. Then remove 3 to 4 candles to the clay for a total of 1 to 2 candles. Light the candles in the bowl. While the candles are still burning, place the pint size mason jar over the candles in the bowl. Carefully observe the base of the container, the water level in the container, and the flames. Record your observations. Remove the jar from the bowl.
• Heat Expansion Hypothesis Method: Add or take away candles until there are 3 candles in the clay. Light the candles in the bowl. While the candles are still burning, place the quart size mason jar over the candles in the bowl. Carefully observe the base of the container, the water level in the container, and the flames. Record your observations. Remove the jar from the
