The Conservative party is placing heavy emphasis on families and seniors, and while these two categories seem to be all-encompassing of the Canadian population, that idea falls short under an examination of the party’s promises. Granted, tax reliefs for single and widowed seniors, and other breaks for families who are starting out and, for example, buying homes or saving for their children’s future college funds, are apparent in the Conservative’s plans. The party claims that “Families are the bedrock of our communities, and by extension, our country” (The Conservative Part of Canada). I do not disagree, but I wonder what is really meant by the Conservative idea of family. Prime Minister Harper, you have said that your government “would consider banning public servants from wearing the niqab, [and that you] reject the suggestion that recent assaults against Muslim women should stifle debate about the issue” (CBC News). The strengths of the NDP platform exist in all the places that Prime Minister Harper has altogether destroyed during his time as the leader of Canada. There is work to be done to renew this, and while many of these issues extend to issues across the world, you and the NDP have the right idea in beginning many of these remedies at the municipal level. While promising to increase jobs, the NDP Consumer Protection Act promises to reduce the amount of fees that come with accessing one’s own money, which will ultimately help individuals and small business owners retain more of their own funds. You are also promising to help training and education opportunities for young people, to increase available jobs and rights of workers in these jobs.
