To start this laboratory experiment, we first collected all the materials necessary including multiple beakers, samples of each solution, metal strips, a salt bridge, alligator clips, and an abrasive sponge. Then 10 mL of CuSO4(aq) and 10 mL of ZnSO4(aq) were placed into separate 250 mL beakers. A copper strip was then placed in the beaker containing CuSO4(aq) and a zinc strip was placed into the beaker with ZnSO4(aq). The two beakers were connected by a salt bridge that consisted of a string soaked in 0.5 M KI solution and each end was placed into each solution.
Next, the alligator clips of the voltmeter were attached to the strips of metal. The black clip was connected to the zinc strip and the red clip was connected to the copper strip. The voltage was recorded using LoggerPro. The clips and metals were removed from the solutions and cleaned. An abrasive pad and DI water was used to wash them.

The CuSO4(aq) solution was then diluted to 0.4 M by placing 8 mL of the solution and 2 mL of DI water into the beaker. The metal strips were reconnected to their respectful alligator clips and the voltage was recorded once more. The dilutions were repeated using 0.3 M, 0.2 M, and 0.1 M CuSO4(aq) , each time being cleaned before replaced. The metal strips were cleaned again and the beaker solutions were recreated using the another 10 mL of each solution. The same process of recording the voltage and changing the molarity was completed, this time using the ZnSO4(aq) solution at molarities 0.5 M, 0.4 M, 0.3 M, 0.2 M, and 0.1

The ratio was found to be 2 moles of H2O for every 1 mole of CuCl2. A new chemical equation of could be written using this stoichiometric ratio. The actual hydration number also is 2 moles of H2O. The calculated absolute percent error was found to be zero since the calculated hydration number was the same as the actual hydration number. It was also found that some of the rehydrated sample could not be recovered because some of the rehydrated sample remained stuck to the filter paper and was unable to be measured in the mass of the rehydrated sample.…

Percent Copper In Brass Lab Conclusion Emily Oleisky The purpose of this lab was to observe the amount of light a solution absorbs, and use the relationships in the Beer-Lambert Law to determine the quantity of a certain compound within a complex sample. First, the relationships between wavelength, concentration, and absorbance were determined. This lab focused on identifying the absorption of copper in various brass samples, and finding the percent copper in brass. In the first activity of the lab, the scientist was trying to determine the difference in molar absorptivity across various wavelengths of multiple salt solutions.…

Determining The Process of Photosynthesis And Cellular Respiration Using Elodea and Yeast Introduction Photosynthesis is an essential process to life on earth, in which plants and other organisms use sunlight to create food from oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Cellular respiration is when energy in food is released and converted to ATP, which is then used as chemical energy to complete tasks within a cell. This process usually requires oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are similar in some areas and different in others. The purpose of both of the process is to produce energy, but they have different ways of achieving this goal.…

In relation to the lab, a weigh boat was placed on the analytic balance and a little over 7g of CuSO4 was added, the balance was then tarred and CuSO4 was removed from the weigh boat and into a 150ml beaker until the scale read as close to -7.0000g as possible, for this experiment 7.0002g of CuSO4 was used. The same procedure was used to measure 2.0000g Fe and 2.0101g was obtained. Once the CuSO4 and Fe were mixed, the solid product was collected using a vacuum filtration apparatus because it is the most effective method of separating a solid from a solvent. Quantitative transfer was implemented to insure that all the Cu was moved from the beaker to the crucible by rinsing the beaker several times with DI water then running the rinse through the vacuum filtration apparatus to collect any leftover…

This was another metathesis reaction in which an acid-base reaction took place. Once the sulfuric acid is added, it was observed that the color of the product turns a clear blue. The above reaction is already balanced at this point. At this point the zinc was added to the solution and the reaction was CuSO4(aq) + Zn(s) ---> Cu(s) + ZnSO4(aq). The solution turns darker after adding the zinc, most likely because of…

Mix matching the voltmeter clips to the wrong electrode will possibly yield wrong negative values thereby indicating non-spontaneity of the reaction. Human errors due to inability to read a measuring instrument, insufficient data collection, and observer misinterpretation can invariably influence the overall accuracy of the experiment. A salt bridge keeps charges from accumulating on one side or the other, thus maintaining charge neutrality. Failure to attach a salt bridge to each half cell causes the solution in the anode compartment to be positively charged and the solution in the cathode compartment would become negatively charged, because of the charge imbalance the electrode reaction would quickly come to a halt. Precision of this experiment could not be evaluated because the experiment was carried out…

This will dissolve and oxidize copper into Cu2+. The solution was then heated to remove the brown NOx fume. This is necessary since NOx acts as an oxidizing agent and will oxidize I in the redox reaction to be observed. When all NOx fume is removed, H2SO4 was added and the solution was heated until white SO3 fumes appear. The addition of H2SO4 will drives off all nitrogen oxide gas that can interfere with the redox reactions. The SO3 vapor that is observed is an indication that all NOx has been driven off.…
