Do you consider yourself to be a strong individual? I don’t mean strong physically, but rather mentally? If so you can probably relate to Buck. Buck is the main character in the story The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Buck is a pampered dog living in a California, but his pampered life doesn’t last. When Buck is stolen and sold into the Klondike he has some lessons to be learned and they better be quick. The theme of London’s novel is that when surviving becomes a struggle only the strong and the quick-witted survive. He portraits his theme through Curly, Spitz, and Buck.
Curly is a female dog who, like Buck, is sold into the Klondike to work as a sled dog. When the dogs arrive in the Klondike they find that there are many other, wilder dogs already there. Curly is quickly attacked by one of these dogs only a short time after they’ve arrived. When she is attacked she immediately snaps back, but she makes a

When he is first stolen and sold, he is an entitled dog who expects to be pampered. This is all he has known for his entire life and sees no indications as to why it would change now. He doesn’t realize that he ruled his household because he was allowed to. This entitled attitude quickly changes when Curly is killed. Her death is an awakening for Buck. He realizes that he isn’t the strongest dog, but if he is going to survive he’s got to become the strongest. Buck strives to get stronger all the time until he is finally ready to face his biggest obstacle. He and Spitz fight in a death battle that Buck quickly realizes he won’t win. Buck has to think quick if he wants to survive and that is exactly what he does. He breaks Spitz’s leg so that he can’t fight back and then kills him. London wants this to show that while strength is important to survival, it is a unification of strength and quick-wittedness that allows for the greatest chance of
