California is the third largest state in the United States and has several different climate areas. But, a large portion of the state (70%) is classified as California Floristic Province. This climate is a Mediterranean-type climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. (International, 2016). Here are two important, or vulnerable species in the area. The first is the Dipodomys nitratoides or more commonly known as the Fresno Kangaroo Rat, San Joaquin Kangaroo Rat, (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources., 2000). In 1994, it was rare, but in 1996 upgraded to vulnerable. (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources., n.d.). It survives in areas near streams, ponds and sloughs. And while venomous, their venom isn’t hazardous to people. They can grow to approximately five feet in length. They hibernate during the winter and start activity seeking burrows left by other small mammals above any threat of flooding in early fall. They emerge in mid spring. The biggest threat they face is due to flood activities due to agriculture. (Swenty, 2015)

(International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, 2000). Sequoia National Park is home to the General Sherman tree. It is the largest tree in the world. The sequoia depends on fire to thrive. Its bark protects the tree from fire, but the heat from the fire releases seeds from the cones. (Giant Sequoias, n.d.).

We placed 42 traps north of the crossing in the main channel and 33 traps just south of the crossing in the main channel. Traps were checked twice daily; in the mornings we inventoried all organisms and emptied traps, and evenings only documented native herps. We pulled traps from Bar X on 08/11 at 1300, two days early due to flooding. During the week, we conducted two visual encounter surveys, one south of Bar X crossing in the creek and one south of A crossroad, in the main channel.…

Imagine aliens arriving to Earth, with the intentions to survive. They take up space and take human food sources. This is essentially what invasive species do here on Earth, causing many problems. A prime example of invasive species are the Europeans coming to the Americas and settling, eventually taking all of the land and resources from the natives. An invasive species is a foreign species that gets transported, whether intentional or not, to a new ecosystem.…

The state of California on average, 75 percent of annual precipitation occurs from November through Mach, with 50 percent occurring from December through February. California’s Mediterranean climate is at risk, along with a few precious plants that only grow in the Golden State. Riordan and Rundel (2014) state, California contains “nearly 20% of the world’s vascular plant species, these regions are global biodiversity hotspots” and are a major part of reversing air pollution. Due to a higher demand in agricultural products, farmers and companies have expanded and opened up more land to develop and farm. Again Riordan and Rundel add that agricultural land poses a more immediate threat to the biodiversity than climate change does because of the destruction of native species. Their article continues to question if the mass expansion is driven by the uprising of towns and cities that drive farmers out of…
