The purpose of this lab is to examine cross sections from the leaves of C3 and C4 plants and to determine the morphological differences between them while relating those differences to their metabolism. In C3 plants the carbon dioxide is first incorporated into a 3-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place throughout the mesophyll cells. In comparison C4 plants, the CO2 is first incorporated into a 4-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place within the inner cells.…
In 1981, George Streisinger and his colleagues began to use zebrafish as a model organism for research. Since then, they have become a popular model organism for biomedical research. Zebrafish primarily have been used to study vertebrate development, evolution, genetics, and disease. Zebrafish are popular as pets and genetically modified, glow-in-the-dark zebrafish have been developed for the aquaria trade as well. Zebrafish have many attributes that make it a popular model organism for biomedical research.…
. Why does (or doesn’t) the frequency of a physical trait change in a rabbit population in different environments? c. This is an important investigation as understanding how populations are affected by different traits helps to understand why certain species thrive in an a certain an environment and why others don’t. This is an interesting investigation as there are no predators in this investigation, the rabbits are competing for food and that is why they are dying at an alarming rate.…
1. Guinea worm disease is likely to become the first parasitic disease to be globally eradicated. 2. A female Guinea Worm can grow up to three feet! 3.…
In this equation, x and y denotes the number of moles of RE and Mn atoms per formula unit of the structure, respectively. The RE and Mn represent the theoretical magnetic moment of trivalent free RE3+ ions and divalent Mn2+ ions respectively. The experimental values of total magnetic moments were found to be smaller than the calculated values (Table xyz). The crystal field effects can lead to lower value of magnetic moments for RE3+ ions in these compositions as compared to free RE3+ ions, which in turn could lower the total magnetic moment of these compositions. This discrepancy in the total magnetic moment values could also be due to the presence of secondary phases in these samples.…
R.C. 5.9 Mathematics (Mobile Infant) Activity: “Stack Them Up” Materials: Stacking blocks, nesting cups, measuring cups Infants are continually growing in all areas of development. In this activity, the goal is to get the infant to stack their blocks or cups. The teacher would have the child sit on the floor or at a table with their toys.…
To determine the unknown’s morphology is the first step in narrowing down possible organisms. A MacConkey and Mannitol Salt Agar tests were conducted on the organism and revealed the following. No growth on the MacConkey plate resulting in a gram positive bacteria and the Mannitol Salt Agar result showed it could be Staphylococcus or Micrococcus. (1) A gram stain test was used in determining the shape, size and arrangement of the unknown bacteria (1). The unknown organism is heat fixed onto the slide, in order for the organism to be stained.…
The Strength of the Yucca-Yucca Moth Interaction: Review of Past Scientific Studies Abstract The relationship between Yucca moths from Tegeticula, Parategeticula and Prodoxous with the Yucca plant (Agavaceae) has been observed over centuries. The strength of their interaction has created contradictory theories. Whether the relationship is obligate or falcultative is one of the ideas providing differing views. The effects of external influences have also been studied by many.…
Determining the affects of natural selection on gall fly (Eurosta) larvae from different predators Ariel O’Neil Biology 1020H Abstract This lab was done with the objective of determining if directional selection causes early larvae death in the gall fly. By first examining the parasitoid wasp and birds predatory actions we can hypothesize and predict the smaller galls will be most likely to survive directional selection.…
In the BIO 14 Lab, we attempted to design a oviposition experiment that would tell us something about the relative behavior of two variants of a beetle species Callosobruchus maculatus (SI – originating from South India & BF – originating from Burkina Faso). The specific question being asked in our experiment is: How does the availability of the preferred bean type affect the oviposition strategy (measured by the number of eggs on each bean) of female SI and BF beetles? Most of our group members actually arrived this question at first independently and upon further discussion found that we all were looking to answer the same question. I arrived at this question as when looking that preferred seed of the two beetle types were so vastly energetically…
Gene crossover, the exchange of genetic material between two homologous chromosomes, can be observed in many different instances with the help of model organisms. Many scientists observe gene crossover to better comprehend the heritability patterns of unrelated genes (Chen and Olive, 1965). In the case of this experiment, the use of Sodaria allowed students to observe the inheritance pattern of two different phenotypes when crossed in a a petri dish (Saleem, et al., 2001). Sordaria, a microfungi commonly found in feces of herbivores, was the subject of this study. Using Sodaria, students were able to observe random genetic crossing due to a mutation that the test subject underwent many years ago that only allows it to mate via sexual reproduction.…
Slime is made by mixing together borax, glue, and water. Depending on the amount of borax added to the mixture will determine the density of the slime. For our experiment in class the independent variable was the borax. The dependent variable was slime. The control group was glue.…
elegans an ideal model organism for studying the genetics of behaviour, development and neuroscience. The reproductive cycle (four larval stages) lasts for just up to three and half days while each organism is capable of yielding about 300 progenies. The fact that Hermaphrodites can reproduce either by cross- or self-fertilisation allows for the viability of mutant strains even without mating behaviour and even paralysed worms with an absent nervous system function can be grown in the laboratory, allowing the analysis of strains with mutations such as synaptic vesicle proteins and voltage-gated channels.…
Animals used in the experimentations include mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds in the US. Laboratories aren't the best place for animals since the animals are locked in cages and denied freedom. They also don’t get control over their…
They can be resistant to pests, herbicides, drought and disease (Whitman). Most farmers lose a huge quantity of money to crops that fail because they lack resistance like this. However, GM crops have a lot less of these problems because that is how they were made. The cost of production is small for these foods. For developing…
